Enchanted
The movie that will be this season's guilty pleasure. "Enchanted" is a fairy tale turned to modern age movie, think Martin Lawrence's Black Knight only in reverse. Giselle played by Amy Adams is a princess who is kicked from her Disney-esque fairy tale life (literally in cartoon) to a real life, modern day New York City. While bumbling about NYC, she runs into McDreamy, himself, Patrick Dempsey, and hijinks ensue. Susan Sarandon plays the evil mother-in-law to be, while James Marsden is the knight in shining armor Giselle is meant to be marrying.
This Christmas
The first film out that is a family reunion Christmas movie. You've got to give credit where credit is due - and they've won at least that much with this movie. Based on a number of family reunion cliches, this movie stars Mekhi Phifer, Regina King, and Chris Brown. The movie has an "urban" spin (Think "Soul Food" for Christmas) to the normal tale of a dysfunctional family movie. If you are already hanging your mistletoe, this is the movie for you this weekend.
The Mist
Stephen King hasn't always had the best of luck with big movie productions. Maybe it's because he doesn't write his own scripts and isn't involved in production at all. It's not clear why he continues to let Hollywood massacre his books. Maybe it's just that he doesn't care about the average movie who probably hasn't read the book anyway. The Mist is the latest attempt to bring the horror of Stephen King's written word to the big screen. Luckily, it's being helmed by the man (Frank Darabont) who is responsible for the most successful movies that came from Mr. King's work - 'The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile".
In this rendition, a group of people are trapped in a grocery store by monsters lurking outside in a thick mist. As the horror unfolds, the people break into separate groups and we start learning that the monster's outside may not be the only horrors. The movie stars Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Andre Braugher. It is written and directed by Frank Darabont.
August Rush
An orphaned musical prodigy, Evan, who feels a connection with his musical talent and his estranged parents uses his ability and newfound fame to try to and find his parents. Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Keri Russel play Evan's parents, Louis and Lyla, who are not aware, through a series of unrealistic circumstances, that Evan was even born. Once Lyla discovers the truth, she works desperately to find Evan and rekindle her relationship with Louis.
Hitman
Timothy Olyphant ("Live Free or Die Hard", HBO's "Deadwood") plays the main character, Agent 47, who plays an assassin sent to kill a candidate running for the Russian presidency. The assassination attempt doesn't go as planned and he embarks on a fight for his life. The movie is based on the video game of the same name. Expect a lot of action and little substance.
