Salem Monthly: What was your favorite album from 2007?
Charles Normal: I think Mill Race's "Two EPs" is probably the most interesting local release of the past year. Julian Snow is so talented that even when he's trying to be minimalistic his songs come across as complex.

SM: Who is the most promising new act to debut in 2007?
CN: Mickey Bare has a new solo act called The Heavy which is pretty cool. Kind of like a Righteous Animal show except that you can hear the vocals!

SM: What was the most memorable music moment in 2007?
CN: Seeing Wintermuse for the first time at their final show. I hope they have a reunion gig pretty soon. I feel like I missed something.

SM: What album are you looking forward to in 2008?
CN: I know that Righteous Animal is working on their debut CD, which I think will probably be great. Also, a new Mark Lemhouse CD is long overdue; if we're lucky we'll get one in the upcoming year.

SM: What is your prediction for the local music scene in 2008?
CN: That's up to the musicians themselves. I hear a lot of local band members saying "support your local music scene," but it's funny, I don't see those people going to shows themselves unless they're playing them. A lot of people whine that there isn't a good scene here, but they're not helping matters very much. You reap what you sow.

Catch Guards Of Metropolis on YouTube: "Perfect World," from the album Alligator.
