Brunch options get a thumbs up at this steak house Mike’s Steak and Seafood House is known as one of the best places for a steak dinner in Salem. It doesn’t seem to be widely known yet for its Sunday brunch. We had half of the restaurant all to ourselves. The food was delicious. Of course, we expected nothing less. I enjoyed a Spanish omelet, which was made with seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, peppers and onions, and garnished with salsa and sour cream. Others in our group had a Denver omelet, eggs Benedict, and the biscuits and gravy; the eggs that came on the side, they reported, were cooked perfectly. The server was attentive and kept our coffee cups full.
The breakfast menu is not extensive, with only eight choices, but reasonable for a restaurant that doesn’t specialize in breakfast. There is no vegetarian option, though this shouldn’t be unusual for a steak and seafood place, but they were able to accommodate the vegetarian in our party with a Spanish omelet minus the beef.
A benefit of brunch at a place like Mike’s is the bar — you can get a Bloody Mary, mimosa (orange juice and champagne), or other drinks with your meal. The real surprise was the cost. Ranging in price from $4.75 (for the bacon and eggs) to $6.95 (for the eggs Benedict), they were very affordable. The Denver omelet and Spanish omelet, made with three eggs each and served with a side of potatoes, were only $5.95 apiece. I don’t know if many people have noticed, but it has become increasingly difficult to find a good omelet for under $8. If a good steak dinner isn’t something you can afford to indulge in regularly, you can visit Mike’s for the Sunday brunch. I expect to be back soon. Brunch is available on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dinner begins at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and at 1 p.m. Sunday.
