McCain, Clinton come out on top in Florida

In a tight race, Florida has decided that Senator John McCain is worthy of the top spot in the GOP primary. He earned 36 percent of the vote with 66 percent of the precincts reporting. In second place, Mitt Romney holds 32 percent and in third, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has only 15 percent.

The GOP will choose its direction with today's primaries in Florida. A McCain win means that the Republican base is comfortable with his (sometimes) moderate voting record.

Florida holds "closed" primaries, meaning a voter has to be associated with the party primary with which they are voting. This means that people regiestered as Independent would not have the option of voting for McCain. It was a heavily debated issue in the South Carolina debate, and McCain's current frontrunner status and second big win seems to prove that he is, indeed, conservative enough for the Republican base.

Florida's primary date-change has resulted in both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party stripping delegates from the state. For the GOP, only half of the delegates will be able to vote at the convention. Unfortunately for the democrats, Florida has been stripped of all its delegates, so Senator Hillary Clinton's win is slightly bittersweet.

Senator Clinton has won in Florida with 50 percent. In second place, Senator Barack Obama has 32 percent and John Edwards has come in third with 15 percent.

Even with no delegates being awarded, over 400,000 Democrats casted ballots in early voting and absentees. Not surprisingly, Senator Clinton has called for a reversal of the decision to allow Florida Democrats to be heard.
