A research group in Switzerland has conducted a study of the characteristics of cannabis users who have never smoked tobacco.Over 5,000 students were surveyed and they fell into three categories: cannabis-only smokers, cannabis and tobacco smokers, and abstainers. The study found that cannabis-only adolescents show better functioning than those who also use tobacco.
When compared with the group that used both cannabis and tobacco, the cannabis-only users were more likely to live with both parents and to have a good relationship with them. Academically, they were more likely have good grades and to believe that they would finish their schooling.
The cannabis-only group was also compared to the abstainers and cannabis users were found to be more socially driven, to be sensation seeking, and to practice sports. In this instance they were less likely to have a good relationship with their parents.
In a surprising twist, one of the few places the results of this study have been publicized in the U.S. is through Fox News. To see Fox News coverage visit FOX News. To view the results of the study visit AMA.
