Local poet Miguel-Loredo is on a mission to build a spoken word community in the Salem area. Currently his group Loredo and Friends hosts poetry readings and performances throughout the Willamette Valley, including a monthly, ongoing open mic show at Cravings Coffeehouse in Salem. The next show that Loredo and Friends is hosting will occur this Saturday at Steam Heat Coffee in Keizer. Some of the performers for this show include musician Richard Dirlam, musical group Western Routes, Miguel-Loredo and Ramon-Blaine.
F.I. Goldhaber also will participate in tomorrow night's reading. Goldhaber is an award-winning, internationally published author, who has written professionally for more than 25 years.
Goldhaber says that Loredo's poetry is very passionate and that tomorrow's performance might surprise some people who have attended other local events hosted by Loredo and Friends.
"His poetry speaks of anger about politics, racism, and injustice with energy and fire and he has found other poets who have something powerful to say through their words," Goldhaber said.
This spring and summer Loredo plans to develop workshops that he can offer to the local spoken word community to help people of all ages "find their voices."
Loredo and Friends has set up a Google group that will provide notification of upcoming events to people who are interested. Goldhaber currently volunteers to help Loredo publicize his spoken word events by managing the Google group. Anyone is welcome to sign up. To access that group, visit Salem Spoken Word's Google Group.
Tomorrow's reading will take place at 8 p.m. at Steam Heat Coffee, 3960 River Road North in Keizer.
