On Tuesday, February 26, Salem Monthly Newspaper held its first city election forum. Around 80 people showed up in Hudson Hall at Willamette University to watch prospective city officials discuss issues such as the environment, public participation, Salem's economy and growth and development. Topics that came up throughout the evening included the plans for a new West Salem bridge, airport expansion, the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement and downtown's new EID tax. The candidates also spoke out about issues that were important to them, such as a better public transit system, graffiti and meth issues, as well as a heightened public interest in City government.
Parking was a hot topic of the evening, with the candidates discussing the 2-hour parking policy and the future of downtown parking.
The questions were led by Assistant Editor Cliff Boyer. Participants included mayoral candidate Lloyd Chapman and council candidates Diana Dickey and Chuck Bennett. Mayor Janet Taylor was scheduled to attend and participate, but changed her mind two days before the forum.
The candidates appeared to enjoy the opportunity to speak out about local issues. Those attending the forum also appeared to enjoy themselves, although many expressed disappointment that the mayor wasn't there.
WillametteLive was at the forum, providing a live blog for those who could not attend, but still wanted to keep up with the event. Several people were also there recording the forum, and there is live video of the night available right here on WillametteLive. There also will be a podcast available soon.
Salem Monthly hopes to make this election forum a regularly occurring event, coinciding with the mayoral election every two years.
