With national politics eating away at our time, energy and perhaps even our pocketbooks, it's easy to forget that there are several heavily contested seats here in Oregon -- and Salem -- as well. On the local front we have the mayoral race between incumbent Janet Taylor and Lloyd Chapman. Whoever wins this May will be the lone name on November's ticket, so this is an important race.
Jeff Merkley, Steve Novick and Candy Neville are competing to race against Gordon Smith in November. There also are three ballot measures on the May 20 ticket.
The League of Women Voters offers a little voting help for those of us who may have been swept away by the national election. They have taped a non-partisan presentation of Ballot Measures 51, 52, and 53 at CCTV, as well as Candidate Forums for the offices of Mayor of Salem and the Polk County District Attorney.
The schedule for viewing these programs is available at cctvsalem.org. The League of Women Voters voters' guide is available in libraries and schools or it can be viewed at www.lwvor.org.
