Some may argue that Senator Barack Obama's pastor is anti-patriotic or racist. Others may say that he is telling the truth of being black, low-income, and living in the USA. Regardless of your viewpoint, the presumptive Republican nominee Senator John McCain should have his positions put under the microscope in the same fashion. You may recall that Senator McCain's man-in-cloth -- Pastor John Hagee -- endorsed McCain's presidential aspirations. Senator McCain was happy at the time to accept his endorsement stating in a town hall meeting in Houston: "I was pleased to have the endorsement of pastor John Hagee yesterday." He has since backtracked, "Yesterday, Pastor John Hagee endorsed my candidacy for president in San Antonio, Texas. However, in no way did I intend for his endorsement to suggest that I in turn agree with all of Pastor Hagee's views, which I obviously do not." Now, what views does John Hagee hold that McCain may not want to be associated with?
Here's a quick overview of what makes John Hagee a scary, scary man:
- On NPR's "Fresh Air," he claimed that the Qur'an contains a "scriptural mandate" to kill Christians and Jews.
- He claims that Hurricane Katrina was a punishment for "a level of sin that was offensive to God." He also suggested that the pressure that the Bush administration was putting on Israel to abandon land was a second reason.
- In his book "Jersusalem Countdown," he claims that the persecution of Jews throughout history was caused by disobedience of those Jews. In other words, blaming the Holocaust on the Jews of the time.
- He also accuses the Catholic church of working with Hitler to exterminate the Jews. The Catholic League released a statement shortly after the endorsement, which read: "There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them. Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church. For example, he likes calling it `The Great Whore,' an `apostate church,' the `anti-Christ,' and a `false cult system.' "
- The U.S. must hasten "rapture" by going to war with Iran and maintaining absolute support for Israel
Does listening to a pastor automatically make you agree with everything they say? After courting Hagee and then proudly accepting his endorsement, there are some tough questions that McCain should be answering in the same way that Obama has to answer to Wright's beliefs. Here are a few to think about: Does McCain believe that Catholics are just as responsible for the Holocaust as Hitler? Does McCain believe that Hurricane Katrina was brought on because of God's wrath? Does McCain believe that Muslims are programmed to kill and cannot be negotiated with? Does McCain believe that war in Iran is biblically the route to go without any military strategy involved?
Those questions actually affect McCain's ability to function as President. Obama being questioned on whether he believes that the US causes terrorists attacks by being a terrorist itself or if the government manufactured AIDS to attack black people has no bearing on Obama's ability to lead the country. The truth of the matter is neither of these men can possibly believe everything that a man has said for the duration of his life. Questioning either candidate on it is ridiculous. However, if you question one you should question everyone in the same manner.
