An East Coast jazz saxophonist described as “a small man with a big sound” will play at the Coffee House Café Tuesday, March 24.

Jeremy Udden, a Boston native and Brooklyn resident, is touring in support of his new album, “Plainville.” The performance begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free.

“I’m still not quite sure how he found the Coffee House Café,” owner Lari DeLapp said. “But apparently he’s also stopping in at schools while he’s on tour and sitting in on lessons with students.”

Udden’s two-hour set is expected to include original music as well as covers of The Bangles, Steve Lacy, Lennie Tristano, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, and The Beatles.

Udden’s debut as a leader on the album "torchsongs" was hailed as “a small wonder, full of color and daring” by the Village Voice. The record features Bob Brookmeyer, Matt Wilson, Ben Monder, and others performing Udden’s unique brand of melodic jazz/rock meets the avante garde, including nine originals and covers by the Bangles and Udden’s teacher, Steve Lacy.

A long-time member of the Grammy nominated Either/Orchestra, Udden recorded three albums with the band and toured Europe, Africa, and around the US a number of times. Twenty records to his credit as a sideman with projects in the jazz, avante-garde, rock, pop, and world music genres, has given him a wide swath of music from which to cull his unique sound.

"Plainville" features a more folk-influenced twist, finding a niche on bills with country and folk groups as well as jazz.
