JETSONS GO JAPANESE

I grew up watching The Jetsons and envisioned moving sidewalks and instant food at an early age, in spite of real-world evidence to the contrary. But Salem now has Sushi Kyo with a serpentine conveyer slowly meandering past your seat, tempting you with sushi, gyoza, edamame, salad rolls and even chocolate
cake, just an arm's length away.

Your selections are conveniently priced by plate color: $1.20 for the red plate, $1.55 for yellow, $1.85 for the green and $2.25 for the blue. The Maki sushi (rolls) consists of two, four or six slices and the nigiri (seafood atop a rice mound) is the traditional two per serving. Booth and counter seating are available and both proffer Japanese crockery containing ginger and wasabi, regular or light soy sauce and wooden disposable chopsticks.

Sushi Kyo's full-color brochure touts the health benefits of eating fish with its omega-3 fatty acids and the antioxidant value of green tea.

Our sampling included edamame, a spicy squid salad, tobiko, tempura prawn roll, shrimp salad rolls, gyoza, baked mushrooms, California rolls and teriyaki chicken. If you don't see it on the conveyer, the friendly waitstaff will place an order for you.

Three of us dined, amassing a stack of 19 plates, which rang up a tab just under $32 including green tea with refills. This could be the price for one person at some sushi bars, so we were all pleasantly surprised.

The ambiance has all the charm of a cafeteria, but you can watch the chefs prepare food and be mesmerized by the conveyer, so it has its own unique charm. This place is designed to get you fed quickly and affordably and in these areas Sushi Kyo excels. The sushi is what you would expect from a chain operation, rather plebian but satisfying. If I wanted a quick meal on my way to a movie or while shopping on Lancaster Drive, this would certainly fill the bill. Sushi Kyo is a welcome addition to Salem's ever-changing restaurant offerings.
