Idoltude: David Cook and Jason Castro stand out in American Idol's Mariah Carey night

Going into tonight's show I had low, low expectations. What do you expect when it's Mariah Carey night? She might have a vocal range to die for, but her songs are perpetually junior high-esque. That coupled with the feeble female performers of this year's Idol cast, are certainly makings for disaster. But the night turned out to be not as bad as it could have been. No, NOT because of the women. Because of the men.

David Archuleta ("I Believe") This week David was in his element once again - showy, ballady, inspirational songs are his forte. He sang well, so I'll let him slide one more week. But hear this, David. It's time for something new. Next week, bust out some death metal.

Carly Smithson ("Without You") This song just goes on and on and repeats itself over and over, which was highlighted even more so by Carly's tedious rendition. Happily, the judges were not impressed either. Could it finally be her time to go?

Syesha Mercado ("Vanishing") She did fine, but it was nothing special. Syesha is nothing special. It shocks me that she actually has fans.

Brooke White ("Hero") Once again Brooke sat down at the piano and sang her little heart out. Unfortunately, Brooke, we've heard it all before. You peaked during Beatles Week, sweetie. Time to change things up a bit.

Kristy Lee Cook ("Forever") This was one of the most uncomfortable performances I've seen in a long time. Kristy is the VoteForTheWorst.com pick, but I wish she'd do something interesting to earn her spot of honor there. C'mon. Make Oregon proud. Wear a faux hawk tomorrow.

David Cook ("Always Be My Baby") Thank god for David Cook. Tonight he showed America why he deserves to win the competition. This edgy, creative performance knocked the socks off the judges and made last week's dismal feat a distant memory.

Jason Castro ("I Don't Wanna Cry") Tonight Jason Castro worked his magic and in his quiet, comfortable way reminded voters why he belongs in the Top Seven. One of the best things about Jason (besides those beautiful eyes) is that he knows himself as an artist. There's no experimenting here. Just his simple, pleasant music. Take it or leave it.

Tomorrow's Bottom Three should be interesting. All things fair, it really should be Carly, Syesha and Kristy, but after last week's debacle, we know that things aren't always fair in the land of Idol. So I won't be surprised if Brooke or Jason shows up in the Bottom Three. But please, oh please, can we send Kristy home? Finally?
