Idoltude: American Idol contestants butcher Beatles' tunes

Having been raised in the home of an avid Beatle-maniac, I can say with some conviction that most of what we heard tonight from the Idol contestants was NOT good. In fact a lot of it was just downright bad. Even decent contestants came up short. On the bright side there were a couple excellent performances that managed to balance the abysmal ones and make the evening somewhat of a success.

Syesha Mercado (Sang "Got to Get You Into My Life") I've been a fan of this girl, but tonight she sucked big time. It was cheesy karaoke at a wedding. John Lennon would be turning in his grave. And the big stage was waaaaay too big for little Syesha. She did well in past weeks, but I think she may have peaked on the small stage.

Chikezie (Sang "She's a Woman") Here was the surprise of the night. I had no love for Chikezie up until now. But this performance was GREAT. He started out a little twangy, then built to a full-on rock performance. He finally - FINALLY - proved that he deserves to be in the competition and easily gave the best performance of the evening.

Ramielle Malubay (Sang "In My Life") She was awful. Poor phrasing choices. Boring song. In fact, she didn't even get the meaning of the song, as exhibited by her pre-show blathering about it being dedicated to all her friends. Maybe if she spent just a tad more time understanding the meaning of the song her performance would not come off so robotic.

Jason Castro (Sang "If I Fell") He pretty much sucked. But I love him anyway.

Carly Smithson (Sang "Come Together") Carly is in the same category as Chikezie. She earned a big wow factor. Great performance and I finally get why she is on this show at all. But she's still strange looking.

David Cook (Sang "Eleanor Rigby") Excellent performance. Great rendition of a great song. Very alternative; very Pearl Jam-esque. I loved it and I love him.

Brook White (Sang "Let It Be") I tried so hard to hate goody-two-shoes Brook. But at the end of the day, the girl can sing. Not to mention perform. I hate to admit it, but she's here to play and she'll probably be in the Top Three.

David Hernandez (Sang "I Saw Her Standing There") Move over, Amanda Overmyer, I'm betting that VoteForTheWorst.com has a new favorite. David absolutely butchered his song. He danced like a monkey and sang like an amateur.

Amanda Overmyer (Sang "You Can't Do That") I just have one, simple request from you Ms. Overmyer. Please stop screaming at me.

Michael Johns (Sang "Across the Universe") Michael has definitely had better nights, but his was certainly not the worst of the evening.

Kristy Lee Cook (Sang "Eight Days a Week") In fact Michael's song was like a breath of fresh air compared with the sheer horror of watching Kristy Lee Cook's country rendition of "Eight Days a Week." She sounded awful, but worst of all she killed the song. Well, FIRST she killed it, and then she stomped on it with her cowboy boot and spit her chaw on it. Go home, Kristy! Go back to your ranch. Need I remind American that had you listened to me and sent her home weeks ago we wouldn't have been exposed to this dismal performance? Please, please let this be her last week.

David Archuleta (Sang "We Can Work it Out") Even sweet little David couldn't pull off a good performance tonight. Poor thing blew his wad by doing Lennon two weeks ago. Ah well, America loves him and he'll get another chance.

You don't think Kristy Cook sings well.I agree.

Good journalism is making your point and avoiding

unnecessary editorializing.You need to explain

in musical/stylistic terms what you think is

wrong.

"spit her chaw on it" ,"go home " et c. says

more about your aggressive nature than it does

about the performance.

but not over someone butchering PAUL's song "Got to Get You Into My Life". Just wanted to help get the facts straight.

Signed,
A Beatle FANatic who didn't even watch this atrocity due to phlegm producing thoughts of the Boys being put through the Idol meat grinder.
