In the summer months many galleries and museums downshift as the crowds wane and thoughts turn to vacation getaways. Luckily the Hallie Ford Museum of Art is gearing up for a hot summer show."Ken Butler: Hybrid Visions" celebrates the work of visionary artist Ken Butler, creator of whimsical and ingenious hybrid musical instruments constructed using unconventional materials. A native Oregonian who was active on Portland's art scene before decamping to New York nearly 20 years ago, Butler has achieved international renown and his creations are exhibited and featured in the collections of major museums worldwide. He is also widely regarded as an avant-garde musician, mounting multi-media installations and playing his instruments with art world luminaries such as Laurie Anderson.
"Hybrid Visions" includes 56 instruments, ranging from a metal detector cello and swim fin violin to a knee pad guitar. Among the other objects that show up in Butler's instruments are a prosthetic arm, hubcaps, chair backs, clocks and a bicycle seat.
Many artists working today challenge the fine arts canon by using nontraditional materials. What sets Butler apart is his knack for sublimely melding form and function, bringing together seemingly disparate materials in visual and musical harmony. And Butler's pieces aren't just interesting and fun to look at -- they sound cool too.
