Holistic treatments boost defense against H1N1

This flu season, H1N1 is particularly prevalent. In addition to being a nasty virus, it carries with it a lot of cultural baggage in the form of fears and misconceptions.

Like seasonal flu, H1N1 is spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea. It is possible to be infected and have respiratory symptoms without a fever.

Most people who have been sick with 2009 H1N1 virus have recovered without needing medical treatment. However, hospitalizations and deaths from infection with this virus have occurred. You should seek urgent medical care if you experience severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or persistent vomiting.

How can I protect myself from H1N1?

The number one way to prevent transmission is also the easiest: frequent handwashing. Carry hand-sanitizing gel for when soap and water is not available. Practicing these simple everyday actions keep the immune system strong: find ways to reduce stress, eat a whole-foods diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, exercise regularly, get adequate sleep, avoid sugary foods, and reduce alcohol intake.

Should I be vaccinated against H1N1?

One's primary care physician can help decide whether or not a vaccination is the way to go. The CDC recommends vaccination for certain high-risk groups, including people 65 years and older, children younger than five years old, pregnant women, and people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma and kidney disease.

What additional precautions can I take?

Give the immune system a boost with a flu-season regimen based on Chinese medicine. Regular acupuncture treatments, Chinese herbs, and select nutritional supplements such as vitamin D, vitamin C, Omega-3 oils and elderberry greatly improve the chances of staying healthy this flu season.

How does Chinese medicine prevent and treat the H1N1 virus?

From the perspective of Chinese medicine, swine flu is not so different from other types of flu and can most certainly be prevented and treated by means of Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicines for H1N1 do not attack the virus. Rather, they try to remove those internal conditions in the body that enable the virus to take hold and multiply. "There is no medicine to directly kill the virus. A virus is like a seed: it needs things like temperature and water to grow," Dr. Xu Wenbing, Chairman of the Hope Institute of Chinese Medicine in Beijing, said. "When you take away these conditions, the body will cure itself."

Acupuncture helps by bringing the body back into balance, making it more resistant to potential invading viruses. There are specific acupuncture points for boosting the immune system, including points for increasing your white blood cell count. If one is already ill, acupuncture can speed recovery and lessen the symptoms of illness.

On the herbal medicine front, a formula to prevent the A1/H1N1 influenza has been issued by the Beijing Committee of Experts for Flu Prevention and Control. Dubbed the “flu-prevention drink,” it contains Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle flower), Ban Lan Gen (Isatis root), Gan Cao (Licorice root) and Bo He (Peppermint). Pharmaceutical-grade Chinese herbs are available from a local acupuncturist/herbalist who modifies the formula for one's individual health condition.

Dumb and Dumber (#1)

Many of the dietary supplements suggested in the article have not been proven effective with scientific studies published in peer-reviewed literature. They will certainly be effective in reducing the size of your wallet. The article quotes Dr. Xu Wenbeng as saying "A virus is like a seed: it needs things like temperature and water to grow. When you take away these conditions, the body will cure itself." Undoubtedly, removing water and temperature will stop H1N1, but it will also kill the person.

boosting the immune system (#2)

Using natural herbs and plant-based foods to increase the bodies natural ability to self-regulate and protect against infection has been around since man roamed on all fours. Contemporary medicine is all based on herbs and plant formulas, manipulated and concentrated for public consumption. Increasing garlic, drinking teas (water) fortified with elderberry, ginger and other herbs on a regular basis not only provides necessary fluid but helps boost nutrients not found in our over-processed foods. Eating organic helps but Id rather an herbal supplement than a vaccine, the cost value ratio makes herbs less expensive in the long run and removes the question of harmful chemicals in my body. nicole carter www.herbalexperience.net

Mr Dumb & Dumber does not understand TCM (#3)
by Anonymous on Sun Nov 01, 2009 at 10:15:56 AM PDT
I have tried Chinese Medicine (TCM) remedies few weeks ago. They worked very well, they have reduced my fever, malaise, coughing and soreness of my muscle. The acute symptoms ceased after 24 hours and full I fully recovered after 5 days. I congratulated the TCM doctor who provided the treatment. (I have paid 24$ for 100 capsules with Chinese herbs powder). I have discussed with the TCM doctor and found out that the recipe of the formula is based on an ancient formula experimented for 2200 years (I was told that the formula was modified to match the H1N1 symptoms..) First time the formula it appeared on Shan Hang Lun (200AD!)... I did some researches on web an found a lot of explanations. However, if Mr Dumb wanted to have some examples (just some)of TCM treatments of cold/infectious diseases go to http://www.itmonline.org/arts/perspire.htm and he will understand what it means "the water" related statement of Dr Xu. Homeopathy for swine (#4)
by Anonymous on Sun Nov 01, 2009 at 12:52:25 PM PDT
Homeopathy has a cure for swine flu. Contact a local homeopath if you get it, or just drink pure lime juice. It works. I had it. It is just a cold. No reason to freak out. Most people who have died from it have died in the hospital, because of the potent drugs they're given. These drugs kill, not the flu. Media swine flu coverage is just a way to scare people into approving Obamacare, which will steal more taxes from us. And don't get the vaccine. Unless you're an idiot. In that case, go get it. You deserve to get poisoned.
