The holidays are usually a great time to celebrate with family and friends. But every once in a while, disaster strikes. Following are simple life-saving steps that you can take to ensure a safe and happy season.
Preventing Christmas Tree Fires
* Never place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks. Never smoke around a tree. Always keep the tree stand filled with water; check it daily.
* Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood stove. When the tree becomes dry, discard it promptly. The best way to dispose of your tree is by taking it to a recycling center or having it hauled away by a community pick-up service.
Holiday Decorations
* All decorations should be nonflammable or flame-retardant and placed away from heat vents.
* Never burn wrapping paper in a fireplace or woodstove. This can cause a chimney fire.
Candle Care
* When using candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them away from flammables and where they cannot be easily knocked down. Never leave the room with candles burning.
* Never put lit candles on a tree
* Never go near a Christmas tree with candles, lighters or matches.
Smoke Detectors/Escape Plan
* Test your smoke detectors at least once a month.
* Salem Fire Department recommends you have a smoke detector in every bedroom and in the hallways leading to the bedrooms.
* Make sure your family has a family escape plan and practice it. If you have guests staying with you over the holidays make sure they know your escape plan.
