Dr. Hanten Day is running for State House District 19, but he recently ran into a challenge that he was not expecting. A 69-year-old law titled the Hatch Act restricts the political activity of certain employees of the federal government who work in connection with federally funded programs.
Day, who works as a government employee, stated that his run for office is being threatened by this act that bars anyone from running for partisan office if their job has any perceived connection with federal loans or grants.
He said that he understood the basis of the act but believed that it was being misapplied in relation to his campaign.
"I understand the desire to keep tax money from influencing political candidates. But this law predates Medicare and Medicaid, and the huge amounts of money the federal government now pumps into the US economy daily. As it's written, this law can affect fire fighters, police officers, basically anyone whose employer receives federal money of some type."
Day stated that he was very open about his employment while submitting paperwork to run for office and that he was never made aware of the act during that process.
He also said that he would see his campaign through to the end even if it ultimately required that he terminate his present employment with the state.
"I will not stop this fight. We are trying to do the right thing. I am just trying to provide a choice."
