Independence Day brings fireworks, barbecues, and Will Smith movies. This year will not let you down unless you have skittish pets that freak out during fireworks, beef that was recently recalled by Fred Meyer, or want to check out the new Will Smith movie.

Will Smith has been the 4th of July box office king for awhile now. So much so that he has relatively little competition this week. Next week brings demons fighting in "Hellboy II," Brendan Fraser opening his eyes really wide and screaming in "Journey to the Center of the Earth," and Eddie Murphy still not being funny in "Meet Dave."

"Hancock"

Superheroes are generally anti-heros. With great power comes great responsibility. Superman didn't ask for the powers he was given; Spiderman was infected by a mutant spider at a science lab (why didn't he sue?); and Batman was just really angry at the mob. Hancock (Will Smith) is a superhero gone wrong. He wants to stop crime so the sirens don't bother his hangover symptoms. For our full review of "Hancock," visit Hancock is unleashed in theatres. Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron co-star. "Hancock" is rated PG-13 and is playing at Regal Movieland 7, Regal Lancaster Mall Stadium 11, and Independence Cinema.

"Kit Kittredge: An American Girl"

Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine", "definitely, maybe") stars as Kit Kittredge, an aspiring reporter with an irresistible urge to bring home strays -- from an abandoned dog to two homeless people. When a crime spree sweeps the town and the local "hobo jungle" is blamed, Kit writes an article about the camp's residents to drum up sympathy. When her own family becomes a victim of the crime spree, she takes on the case herself. Chris O'Donnell, Joan Cusack, Zach Mills, and Madison Davenport co-star. "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" is rated G and is playing at Regal Santiam 11.
