Chemeketa Community College will host a community forum on global warming November 20 in the school's auditorium, Building 6 on the Salem campus.
A screening of "An Inconvenient Truth" is set for 6 p.m. and panel discussion with Chemeketa's life science instructors will follow the screening. The event is free and open to the public.
"We aren't focusing on the causes of global warming, but rather how citizens can act locally to stop it," said Jennifer Schramm, a biology instructor at Chemeketa.
Originally planned as a private screening for the nearly 200 students enrolled in introduction to biology classes, organizers decided to open it up to community participation when Al Gore and the International Panel on Climate Change were honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in October.
"At that point, we felt the forum was imperative because the peace prize is one sign of global acceptance of the science behind climate change, if not the causes," said Schramm.
The Nobel Committee cited Gore and the IPCC for their "their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change."
