A new report from the Oregon Environmental Council (OEC) examines the opportunities and pitfalls associated with Oregon biofuel production. "Fueling Oregon with Sustainable Biofuels" discusses how to take full advantage of the legislation enacted in 2007 when Oregon became the first state to provide incentives for the local production of alternative, renewable fuels.
While recognizing the benefits of biofuels, not only for the environment but for Oregon's economy, the OEC report notes that not all biofuels are equal from a sustainability standpoint. The report makes the case that biofuels can and must be produced with environmentally and socially sound practices. The report suggests ways to maximize the environmental potential of biofuels.
"Biofuels can clearly provide positive environmental benefits," said OEC director of programs Chris Hagerbaumer. "Oregon's goal should be to maximize those benefits and mitigate any negative environmental consequences of feedstock production and fuel processing."
