FILM NOTES - JUNE

Summer arrived in a big way this May with the arrival of "Spider-Man 3," a film that broke box office records, only to plummet the following week after people realized it just wasn't very good.
Now that Spidey, Shrek and Johnny Depp have sailed from theaters, June is shaping up to be an interesting month. George Clooney, Steve Carell, and Michael Moore all make their way into our theaters this month. However, I think director Judd Apatow's ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin") new movie, subtly titled "Knocked Up" has potential to be the big sleeper of the summer.

Here are some June releases:

"Mr. Brooks" (June 1) -- Kevin Costner as a bad guy -- shocking! Not really, at least to those of us who endured "Waterworld." We already think the guy is evil. In any case, Costner takes on the title character, a man whose alter ego is a killer. Demi Moore plays a detective on his trail.

"Knocked Up" (June 1) -- Director Apatow is using a similar marketing strategy for his follow-up to the unexpectedly successful "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." The premise sure looks promising. Seth Rogen plays Ben Stone, a party animal who meets an extremely hot girl (played by Katherine Heigl). They have a one-night stand. So far this sounds like every guy's dream come true, right? One snag -- the hot girl becomes pregnant and life all of a sudden becomes very real as the two have to face the consequences of their actions.

"Surf's Up" (June 8) -- Oh boy, another movie about penguins! (Note intentional sarcasm here). This animated comedy is about the Penguin World Surfing Championship and stars the voices of Jon Heder, Zooey Deschanel and Shia LaBeouf.

"Ocean's Thirteen" (June 8) -- Director Steven Soderbergh has promised a beefed-up script, in response to complaints from critics that he was merely cashing in with "Ocean's Twelve." Let's hope he has delivered. Brad Pitt and George Clooney looking cool in sunglasses goes a long way, but at some point we need at least the illusion of a story.

"Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" (June 15) -- Yawn. My level of caring about this movie is plummeting as I write this.

"Evan Almighty" (June 23) -- Steve Carell stars in this sequel to "Bruce Almighty," which starred Jim Carrey. But since Carrey is busy making garbage like "The Number 23," director Tom Shadayac ("Liar Liar") decided to take Carell's character of prissy newsman Evan Baxter from the first film and build a whole new story around him. Morgan Freeman is back as God, and this time God orders Evan to build an ark.

"Ratatouille" (June 29) -- Another animated comedy, this time from the geniuses at Pixar, about a young rat who lives in the walls of a famous Paris bistro and longs to become a chef. The only problem is people in restaurants don't care for rats. All you really need to know about this movie is that Brad Bird (the guy behind the brilliant gems "The Iron Giant" and "The Incredibles") wrote and directed this movie.

"Live Free or Die Hard" (June 27) -- Gosh, with that whole global warming and Iraq war thing, I was beginning to worry our country was in trouble. But now we don't have to worry any more, because John McClane (Bruce Willis) is back, and he's going to shoot some bad guys -- with guns as well as pithy one-liners. Now we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

"Sicko" (June 29) -- Michael Moore is making trouble again, and this time his target is drug companies. The documentary's tagline is "A comedy about 45 million people with no health care in the richest country on earth." I think that just about says it all.
