The Evergreen Aviation Museum, famous for its display of Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" will soon add a facility that is out of this world.
On June 6 Evergreen Aviation will open its 120,000-square-foot Space Museum. To celebrate the opening of the new museum, a dedication event will be held that will include astronauts General Joe Engle, General Tom Stafford and Titan II expert Chuck Rash. RSVP is required; call (503) 434-4023 for ticketing information.
The new museum will feature artifacts including the Titan II SLV and Titan IV SLV missile, the Willamette Meteorite, a replica Lunar Module, a replica Lunar Rover, and the Russian Photon Space Capsule.
In addition to the new exhibits, the Space Museum will feature a new playground with an aviation/space theme, "The Right Stuff Gift Store," a cafe, wine bar and ice cream shop. It will also be home to McMinnville High School's Engineering and Science Academy starting this fall. Students will spend half-day increments in labs and classes in the museum's classroom facilities.
To complement the new space facility addition, the IMAX 3D theater also at the Museum will be playing "Space Station 3D" throughout the summer. "Space Station 3D" is a story that follows the construction of the International Space Station.
The special IMAX technology gives the audience a unique experience that captures the magnitude of the project being built in outer space. Actor Tom Cruise narrates the film. For show times, visit the Museum online or call the IMAX theater at (503) 434-4180.
