Winter's coming and heating costs are on the rise. More and more homeowners are incorporating "green" living into their homes by replacing less energy efficient heating and cooling systems, purchasing environmentally friendly building materials, and using natural household cleaners as opposed to toxic chemical based options.  Now, there is another option, a "green" fireplace.

FireCrystals, a California-based company, offers a product made from formulated, tempered, and processed glass that is an eco-friendly solution to burning wood or using fake logs in indoor and outdoor fireplaces and fire pits. The glass itself radiates heat and provides a constant flow of warmth, producing as much heat as burning wood. Using FireCrystals results in improved indoor air quality and reduced air pollution because they do not emit ash, soot, or carbon toxins. FireCrystals have no chemical surface, so they burn clean and odorless without any chemical byproducts. FireCrystals are made from glass, making them sustainable and recyclable.

Aside from being eco-friendly, FireCrystals offers health benefits as well. By not emitting fine particles, people who suffer from allergies or other respiratory conditions can enjoy having a functional fireplace with FireCrystals and direct natural gas. According to the EPA, "Wood smoke contains a mixture of gases and fine particles that can cause burning eyes, runny nose and bronchitis. Fine particles can aggravate heart or respiratory problems such as asthma in people of all ages. Even limited exposure to smoke can be harmful to human health."

Because FireCrystals are relatively new technology, it is still unknown how long they will last. But so far they have had one set burning off and on for five years with no degradation in color or performance. For an average square fireplace, it will cost somewhere between $350-$700 depending on what color or grade of crystals you purchase.

To use FireCrystals your fireplace must be either outdoors or offer a natural gas outlet.
