In August, visitors to downtown may be asked to participate in an "Intercept Survey" to get their opinions on the imposition of two-hour parking limits. Participants will be asked about their ability to find a parking space that meets their needs.
Surveys are being conducted by the City of Salem to determine the success of the controversial parking time-limits imposed February 1.
The overall objective of the time-limits is to increase the availability of on-street parking for customers and visitors to downtown. A secondary goal is to increase the use of off-street parking garages.
In May and June surveys were conducted to find out if on-street and off-street parking was impacted by the two-hour parking limit. Administrative Services Director Tony Mounts said they are still waiting for the results of these surveys.
Business surveys were mailed out to downtown business owners in July to get their opinions on the impact of time-limits on their customers and business activity.
There also will be a review to examine the numbers and types of citations issued to see if patterns exist that suggest the need for changes in signage, public information, or enforcement practices.
Tony Mounts said a final draft of survey results will be available for the Downtown Advisory Board at the end of September.
