DeLapp Construction has been a family construction and international property management business for over 35 years. They are involved community members, so when they noted a need in their neighborhood, it was only natural that they stepped in to fill it. But ... a delicatessen?
Alan DeLapp laughs. "It's true, we have no restaurant experience. But in meeting with other business people, we all bemoaned the lack of variety of quality lunch venues in this neighborhood. My dad has built and remodeled grocery stores, and he knows how a good kitchen is set up. We decided to go for it."Alan and his parents, Larry and Debra DeLapp, opened Dolliaz Café and Deli at 1555 12th St. SE, right next to Fitts Seafood Market.
DeLapp Construction is on the other side of the building. They emphasize a family-run, clientfriendly atmosphere. There is a personal touch here -- they know their clients' lives and businesses, and they care. Their goal was to offer quality food at fair prices in a welcoming atmosphere, and to have fun doing it.
Dolliaz has only been open since January 30, but business already is booming. They started with one sandwich counter, and quickly had to move another one in.
A broad base of menu items is offered, and they are working on a few "signature" dishes. They are well known for their soup, with six unique offerings daily. I sampled four of them during my visit. The corn and crab chowder was full-bodied and pleasant, although it was a little heavy on the pepper for my taste. The tomato bisque was excellent, with well-blended spices and a toasty flavor that I really enjoyed. The black bean soup was spicy and delicious. The turkey vegetable boasted a classic preparation and flavor -- again, it was a little heavy on the pepper for this reviewer, but I may be in the minority with that complaint. In creating Dolliaz, the family relied heavily on local businesses, including interior designer Tammy Bogat of Guilded Magnolia.
"We like to support the community, and we love to see everyone succeed," DeLapp said.
The décor is warm industrial -- everyone from contractors with
muddy boots to women's groups to high school students will feel comfortable here. The ceilings are high, the infrastructure exposed, and the colors warm, emphasizing red, brown, olive and black. Overstuffed chairs make a welcoming conversation area by the fulllength windows, and wireless Internet is available throughout.
They are available for full catering, including weddings.
"We are very flexible with the menu -- the sky's the limit!"
They also prepare box lunches, and can accommodate large orders if clients call ahead.
