Dear Madge,
I am a 14-year-old girl and am having a serious problem with my mother. She has decided that it would be cheaper to make my school clothes this year. Since July she has been in the basement sewing like crazy. Yesterday all the clothes that she made for me were on my bed. They are HORRIBLE! There is no way I can wear any of them. I don't want to hurt her feelings, but how do I tell her that not only am I not going to wear these clothes, but that I still need clothes for school?
-- No Drama For Mama

Dear Drama,
If only everyone had problems like yours. Afterall, there are children out there who don't know when their next meal is coming. But this is America, and in America going to high school with homemade clothes is, I suppose, considered a problem. That's my lecture. Now for your advice: Thank your mother profusely for the clothes. Tell her you LOVE them -- but there just aren't enough of them. And unfortunately there isn't time for her to make more. So off to Wal-Mart the two of you will traipse, where you will purchase several cheaply made garments that were crafted by kindergarteners in Malaysia. On the first day of school, dress in the clothes that your mother made and, like hundreds of fashion-challenged girls before you have done, change in the restroom before the school bell rings. In 20 years, if you've grown up enough, maybe the two of you can look back on this debacle and laugh.

Madge is not a psychologist, nor does she have any
training whatsoever in relationship therapy.  She is a saucy, Southern gal who dishes out no-nonsense advice.
