Judah Theater Company off to a good start, again

Fred Jabin started his theatre company eight years ago. His first venture was renting Willamette University’s Smith Auditorium and doing a presentation of “Godspell.”

“We could have sold more tickets,” Jabin said. “But it was a good show. Well acted.” After that they toured “Can Full Of Virtue,” which was their first monetary success. Then, they downsized a bit. His wife became sick and the group took a hiatus.

But the winds have changed, his wife has recovered, and Jabin sees this as a great time and place to start a dinner theatre.

“The size of audiences Salem can tolerate works well with dinner theatre,” he said.

Alessandro’s seems to be a mutually beneficial place to get things started. Tickets are already selling well and that’s without even putting any money into publicity.

Jabin isn’t sure how regular future performances will be. He would like to see them done monthly or every other month, but at this point that remains to be seen. Right now he’s just excited to be a part of helping the downtown revitalization efforts.

“Part of our goal is for the whole town,” he said. “So much is on the verge of happening in downtown. We’re finally becoming the town we should have been 20 years ago.”

The company’s first show will be Neil Simon’s “Star-Spangled Girl,” which is indicative of the type of plays that they would like to continue doing.

“We want to always keep things light,” Jabin said.

“Star Spangled Girl” opens at Alessandro’s on May 18. Dinner options include baked salmon, sirloin, or penne primavera with marinara. Tickets are $28 and include dinner and the show. For information visit www.judahtheater.com. To purchase tickets call (503) 370-9951.
