It takes a lot to get me interested in a chick flick. There are a few movies that I dig -- "10 Things I Hate About You" or the usual Hugh Grant fare, like "Notting Hill" come to mind. When I'm feeling REALLY in touch with my feminine side, I can even pop in "Bridget Jone's Diary" and understand her plight. "Definitely, maybe" joins the ranks of one of my favorite romantic comedies, and honestly it's hard to even qualify it as one. Granted, the story is about love, and more importantly it's about how Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds) fell in love with his daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin)'s mother. Will is divorcing Maya's mother, and Maya hopes that telling by her father telling her the "complicated" story of his courtship, he will reignite their relationship. But with the charm that only Ryan Reynolds can pull off, he turns the story into a "love mystery" and describes how three different relationships branched into his getting married and having a child. What he leaves out is which of the women is Maya's mother.
The full cast of characters is believable, and the angst of lost love really stands out in Reynold's portrayal. The three women are on opposite sides of the spectrum, but also very stereotypical. There's the college sweetheart, Emily (Elizabeth Banks), the sexually open yet emotionally unavailable Summer (Rachel Weisz), and free spirited April (Isla Fisher). Kevin Kline also makes an appearance as a drunken literary professor and author who teaches Summer to embrace her curiosities -- sexual and otherwise.
Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine") is stellar and in line to the throne of cute little girls who act much older than they are. The better parts of the film are when we see her character taking sides with the women throughout the story, picking her favorite in hopes that it turns out to be her mom. The moment after the reveal stands out as one of the better climaxes of the genre and Breslin gets credit for making it happen. That's not to take away from Reynolds, who flexes his acting beyond what we've seen from him so far. Van Wilder has some skill, and here's to hoping he continues to use it.
"Definitely, Maybe" is rated PG-13 and is playing at Regal Lancaster Mall Stadium 11.
