For what it is, "Death Race" is worth the price of admission. Anyone who expects the new Jason Statham movie to be deep and meaningful has never seen a Statham movie. In "Death Race," Statham plays Jensen Ames who is framed for murder by an evil corporate (corporations run everything in the near future, you see) prison warden played by Joan Allen. The warden needs Statham's character to race in "Death Race" which is a reality TV show that puts prisoners together to race for their freedom. It's all about ratings, baby. It's mind-numbing, but for this time of year it hits all the right marks. Tyrese Gibson co-stars in practically the same role that he played in "2 Fast 2 Furious." If he isn't careful, he'll get typecast as the guy who pretends to drive a car really fast while quipping one-liners.
The car sequences are fast and brutal. Most of "Death Race" plays like a big video game, drivers can hit various power ups on the track to get access to weapons and shields. For old school video gamers, this flick could have easily been named "Twisted Metal."
Graphic violence and intense sequences may keep some people away. But those who can stomach it will enjoy the ride. Plus there's nothing like watching an actress of Allen's caliber spill expletives with a bunch of rough neck prisoners cowering at her feet.
"Death Race" is rated R and is playing at Regal Santiam 11,
