Darcy Burner, a Democrat running for Congress in Washington State is running against incumbent Republican Congressman Dave Reichert. Although he is more than likely not on her mind today. Yesterday morning, her house caught fire. It originated in her five-year-old son's bedroom possibly with a bedside lamp. Her son, Henry, did what he was taught in school and alerted his family, which promptly escaped harm. According to Burner's campaign Web site, the family did lose their pet cat, Charlotte, but everyone else is fine. The news of the fire spread across the Internet, with posts on BlueOregon and DailyKos. Something else caught the eye of the political blogosphere, too. The shirt she was wearing at 7 a.m. was not "camera-ready" and she was not prepared for media attention. The shirt is emblazoned with "</war>", which simply means "end war." It's not the first time that Burner has felt the support of the netroots nation, but the combination of the shirt and the tragedy has started a movement to give Burner the fundraising support that she will need as she focuses on reestablishing her personal life.
In this post at DailyKos, Markos Moulitsas says "We can't help with the 'campaign' side of things, but we can help with the money side of things. Darcy would have to raise about $150,000 in the month of July to keep up with her Republican opponent. Us bloggers are going to try and raise that for her."
Their goal is $150,000 and they are $43,000 and counting at this moment. They hope to bring the total across ActBlue, the online clearinghouse used by Democratic candidates, to $400,000. They say that would give her an entire month of fundraising relief.
