Craving a cuppa joe?
The big green house on the corner of State and 17th seems like a perfect spot for a coffeehouse -- a beautiful old home strategically located next to a busy street and the Willamette University campus. But alas, it seems to be cursed. In the past few years it has gone through several owners and remodels. The latest venture is Cravings Etc. Here's hoping the new owners have what it takes to become a Salem institution.
The menu offers a selection of coffee, sandwiches and salads and they offer a full schedule of live entertainment including open mic nights and local bands.

Cravings Etc. is open Sunday through Wednesday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Thursday and Friday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.  Live music is offered Thursday to Saturday, with Thursday being an open-mic night.

Break out the whipped cream
This is the month for local strawberries, so why not celebrate? Both Silverton and Aurora offer strawberry festivals in June. Aurora's 36th Annual Strawberry Social offers strawberries and ice cream over cake or a biscuit. Quilting and spinning demonstrations and live music will occur in the courtyard of the Aurora Colony Museum. Tickets are $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for seniors and $3 for children under 12. Event will be held on June 24 from 12 to 4 p.m. For information contact (503) 678-5754.
The Silverton Hills Strawberry Festival will be held at Coolidge & McClaine Park on June 17. This event will celebrate Father's Day with fresh strawberries, shortcake, ice cream and whipped cream. For information contact (503) 873-5615

Teens are invited to sample mystery foods at library
The Summer Reading Club Teen Program kicks off on June 28 at Salem Public Library with this year's version of Fear Factor Foods. Past years' food combinations have included spam, marshmallows, green olives, dried squid, seaweed and baby food. Program begins at 8 p.m. in Loucks Auditorium and is open to middle and high school students. Competitors must bring a parental consent form available at the library or at www.salemlibrary.org. For information contact (503) 588-6088.
