"Charlie Wilson's War"Tom Hanks plays a small-time senator from Texas who gets sucked into an international arms race. Julia Roberts and Phillip Seymour Hoffman co-star. Drunken playboy senator played by Tom Hanks? Written by Aaron Sorkin, the guy behind the good on The West Wing? I'm there. Welcome to the DVD shelf, Charlie Wilson.
"Cloverfield"
Rooooaaarr. Scary monster comes from under sea and eats New York City. Is it King Kong? Is it Voltron? Is it Cthulhu? Well, no. It's just a scary monster that comes from under the sea and eats New York City. The camera dizzily follows a group of yuppies as they race about town trying to save their friend while not getting eaten. All you motion sickness sufferers can now watch it in the comfort of your own home without vomiting. We covered the theatrical movie released in Cloverfield shaky, yet solid.
"One Missed Call"
Japanese remakes have gone the way of Godzilla. Read: extinct. These horrible movies may be scary in their Japanese origins. But we just get whiny white kids with a cell phone and gory deaths that can't be shown for more than a few seconds.
"The Savages"
A brother and sister played by Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman deal with the harsh realities of adult children's responsibilities as they begin to care for their ailing father. The twist is that their father was abusive, so not only do they feel obligated to take care of him, but they are also dealing with their own personal demons.
