Celebrate the return of American Idol with a fondue party

Nothing says Paula Abdul like a big pot of cheese. Now that many of us have a weekly standing date with her, why not kick it off with a fondue party for your fellow American Idol fans?

Fondue can be made ahead of time and set out in a crock-pot. As long as it is stirred every once in awhile it should last throughout the evening. For simple cheddar cheese fondue, bring to a boil 3/4 cup light beer and one teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Toss a pound of cheddar cheese with some flour and a little bit of dried mustard and slowly add to the beer mixture. Stir until cheese is melted and fondue is smooth. Add to crock-pot and serve with cubed French bread (the crustier the better), broccoli, summer sausage and anything else that tickles your fondue fancy.

For dessert, melt chocolate bars, chips or kisses with a little bit of heavy cream. Add a splash of brandy or red wine for some zing. When it's hot and smooth serve in crock-pot with pieces of banana, whole strawberries, apple chunks, pound cake, cookies, marshmallows or anything else that you have always wanted to dip in chocolate but were afraid to try (skip the pickles; they aren't as exciting as they sound).  If you don't have a good set of fondue forks, wooden skewers (available at any grocery store) will do the trick. For bonus party points stab a few marshmallows and place in a vase for a tempting centerpiece.

NOW you're ready to watch as America's finest strut their stuff on national television.
