CRAZY FOR CARNITAS

Carnitas burritos traditionally offer Mexican-style seasoned pork shoulder, which is braised, then roasted and caramelized. The meat usually turns out tender and flavorful after this intensive process. The preparation methods, cuts of meat, contents and seasoning vary greatly, so we took it upon ourselves to seek out a few good restaurants where you can find quality carnitas. For your reading pleasure we have rated each place on a scale of 2 to 20, with 20 being the best.

Jr's Taqueria
1705 Winter St.
(503) 378-0500
Open daily 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.

The portions here were satisfying. Each carnitas burrito contained seasoned Mexican rice with peas and carrots, beans, pico de gallo and cheddar cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla. They have a house-made green salsa and a red chipotle sauce in addition to bottled sauces on the tables. The taste combination was well-balanced; no single ingredient was overpowering. This burrito scored 18. Price: $4

Muchas Gracias Mexican Food
4940 S. Commercial St.
(503) 585-5871
Open daily 24 hours
Check out Muchas Gracias's Diner's Dish listing page

This popular fast food chain's portion size was almost identical to Jr's. Their burrito contained house-made guacamole and pico de gallo wrapped in a flour tortilla. They also have their own green and red salsas, as well as pickled carrots, onions and jalapenos to complement your meal. The meat, although plentiful, was not as flavorful, but overall this chain does a better job than most taquerias. Plus, the service is speedy. This burrito scored a respectable 17 points. Price: $3.35

El Grullense Restaurant
3081 Portland Rd. NE
(503) 588-2789
Open Mon-Thu 6 a.m. - midnight; Fri-Sun 6 a.m. - 3 a.m.
Check out the El Grullense Restaurant's Diner's Dish listing page.

The burrito here was larger than the previous two, and contained Mexican rice with corn, pico de gallo, and refried beans wrapped in a flour tortilla. The meat was very crispy and chewy, however, so it didn't score well on taste. We chose the drive-up window and waited ten minutes because we hadn't phoned in our order. The burrito came loosely wrapped, making it difficult to eat on the run. It scored 11 points. Price: $3.49

Taqueria el Padrino
Plaza Del Sol shop #190.
3545 Portland Rd. NE
Open Mon-Fri 7 a.m.-8:30 p.m.
Sat-Sun 7 a.m.-5 a.m.

This was the largest burrito sampled and it also came loosely wrapped. It held Mexican rice, beans, a creamy cheese and pico de gallo, as well as house-made red and green salsas, guacamole and pickled peppers. Unfortunately the meat portion on this burrito, although plentiful, was greasy and highly seasoned, dominating the other flavors. This burrito scored an 8. Price: $4.50

I'd like to see more food category reviews in this format. The direct comparison of a favorite is helpful. But I'm curious as to the components of the 20 pt scale system, and how the scores totalled.
