It's been a heated race in a cold South Carolina. Last week, Senator John McCain picked up the majority of delegates for the Republican party in their primary. But the fight was just getting started for the Democrats. With 37 percent of the precincts reporting, Barack Obama is being projected by CNN as the winner of the South Carolina Democratic primaries. In second place is Hillary Clinton with 38 percent of the vote. And in third place, John Edwards with 19 percent. These margins will change as more precincts are reported in, but it is quite clear that Senator Barack Obama has secured his South Carolina win.
The Democratic field has been narrowed to Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Barack Obama, Senator John Edwards, and Senator Mike Gravel. Congressman Dennis Kucinich dropped out from the race this week to focus on his re-election to Congress in his home district.
Clinton has been gaining momentum since New Hampshire, adding a win in Nevada under her belt before campaigning in South Carolina. Senator Obama has been keeping up the pace, after his surprise win in Iowa. Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama have duked it out not only in the media, but also in the South Carolina democratic debate. The debate focused on the economy, a hot topic for the nation and South Carolina.
Former Senator John Edwards has been fighting to stay in the media's eye, even going so far as telling the CNN debate moderator, Wolf Blitzer, "What I want to say first is, are there three people in this debate, not two?" He has since launched a stump speech about representing the "grown up wing of the Democratic party." Despite, his third place finish he has announced previously that he intends to stay in the race until the convention decides.
