The latest adaptation of "Alvin and the Chipmunks" is out on DVD today. In the new movie, Jason Lee stars as Dave Seville. The chipmunks are voiced by Justin Long (Alvin), Matthew Gray Gubler (Simon) and Jesse McCartney (Theodore). The movie co-stars David Cross as Ian, a former college friend of Dave's, who has gone on to become the sleazy owner of a recording company. Dave, an unsuccessful songwriter, discovers the talking Chipmunks and has them sing his songs for his recording company contact. As the Chipmunks hit it big, greed overtakes Ian and he tries to separate the chipmunks from Dave.
Check out the full review of theatrical release at: Alvin and the Chipmunks hip-hop into theatres. The DVD edition appears to be a bare-minimum of features. I'm surprised that they don't have a special edition out with toys.
"Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street" is another movie out on DVD this week.
Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) was outcast from London by Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). He returns under the assumed name Sweeney Todd, and opens a barbershop in London. Sweeney Todd is out for revenge, plotting the murder of all of his enemies. His neighbor Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) is out for meat for her Meat Pie Shop. That's where things get a little weird. It's the latest re-teaming of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, so you've got to expect some strangeness.
There is a special 2-disc edition of the film as well as a one-disc "only the movie" release. The 2-disc version includes a 25 minute "behind-the-scenes" look at making the film, a film press conference with all of the stars, the real history of Sweeney Todd, an interview with Sondheim about musical direction, and numerous interviews about art direction, special effects and prosthetics. The film won an Oscar this year for achivements in art direction so the supplementals covering that piece of the film should be interesting.
