First Wednesday, the monthly celebration of downtown businesses, is encouraging participants to give something back this holiday season.
Though there will be the usual customer appreciation events such as sales, wine tasting and live music, First Wednesday is also suggesting that Salem residents who come downtown on November 7th (from 5 – 8 pm) bring a food donation to help the Marion Polk Food Share to reduce hunger in our community over the holidays.
“One in five families ate from an emergency food box last year in Marion-Polk counties,” says Lindsay Blackman with the Foodshare. “Canned protein and peanut butter are among our most needed items right now.”
“Giving Thanks” donation boxes will be available at participating businesses all evening, while event goers enjoy the special events typical of First Wednesday.
“It’s about more than shopping, it’s about supporting our community,” says Thomas Gilbertson project manager for Salem Downtown Partnership, who organizes First Wednesdays.
