Two new voices have joined Governor Kitzhaber, the Union of Concerned Sciences and the Sierra Club with a call for a thorough environmental review of proposed uncovered coal trains through our area. On September 19th, Portland’s City Council voted to oppose coal trains passing through town until the Army Corps of Engineers gives a full evaluation to the health and environmental hazards of the process. On September 27th, 57 Pacific Northwest tribes joined together to ask for a thorough environmental review of all terminals and routes before approval is granted. At issue are plans for huge numbers of uncovered trains carrying coal from Montana and Wyoming mines, through Pacific States to be shipped by seagoing vessels to Asia.
