Many who have lived in Salem for years will admit, when pressed, that they didn’t realize downtown sidewalks are pink.
But Salem sidewalks are pink.
The astonishing truth has been revealed in recent days as the Downtown Partnership begun scrubbing them and letting the sun shine down.
The Downtown Partnership administers funds that 180 downtown businesses pay to improve their area. Former fund administrators and the city weren’t sure whose responsibility clean sidewalks were. But Downtown Partnership, which took on the job last November, learned from a survey of its members that a top priority was a spruced-up business area.
The partnership simply bought two power washers and got to work.
It plans to continue to keep the area ship-shape, according to Eric Kittleson, President of the Board of the Partnership. He says the group gives grants for ideas such as power washing with its Good Idea Fund (on the Partnership’s website.)
“We really look forward to more great strategies to help downtown move ahead,” Kittleson adds.
So after you recover from bedazzlement at Salem’s pink sidewalks – perhaps it’s time to think about how YOU’D like downtown to glisten even more!
