Quasi, Typhoon, beer garden, Enchanted Forest, GREAT IDEA!
Organizers for the Great Idea Musical Happening have announced the headliners for the 3rd annual event.
This year’s festival also will be the first to feature a beer garden, sponsored by Turner-based brewery Gilgamesh, that opens at 6 p.m.
Kill Rock Stars recording artist Quasi and hometown heroes and 2010 headliner Typhoon are the most notable names, but the alternative-heavy list also includes 2008 Willamette Week “Best New Band” winner The Builders and The Butchers, a reunion of Salem’s Apheliotropic Orchestra, Ryan Neighbors (formerly of Portugal. The Man) and Kirk Ohnstad’s new project Hustle and Drone, Los Angeles’ The Peculiar Pretzelmen, Portland’s Tango Alpha Tango, and Porches, and local band Symmetry/Symmetry.
Quasi features Janet Weiss, former drummer of Sleater-Kinney, Stephen Malkmus and Elliott Smith, and her ex-husband Sam Coomes, former member of The Donner Party and bassist for Elliott Smith and Heatmiser. Weiss also has credits with The Shins, Bright Eyes and John Doe, and Coomes has performed with Jandek and Built To Spill.
Despite all their work on various projects, the two have had found time to tour semi-frequently and record several albums on Kill Rock Stars, Domino, Touch & Go, and Up since the duo’s inception in 1993.
Tender Loving Empire’s Typhoon — which was formed in Salem and has since moved to Portland — is coming off a big year, which saw a national tour, an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, and songs from their latest recording, 2011’s A New Kind of House EP, on television shows “Being Human” and “Chuck”.
Confirmed acoustic acts for the festival include Hawkmeat, Lone Madrone, Alameda, Rich McCloud, Coot and Codger, His Name Shall Breathe, John Fro, Succulent Dish, and The Strangled Darlings. A parade led by local band Tent City will kick off the musical festivities.
The organizers also mentioned that there will be a surprise performer.
Tickets to the event are $22 in advance at Ranch Records in Salem (237 High St. NE), the Gilgamesh Lounge (210 Liberty St. SE), and online at http://greatideafest.com. Tickets are $30 the day of the festival. All tickets include all-day park admission.
