Longtime Salem promoter taking talents to Pennsylvania

70x7

For the past decade Andrew Blankenheim has been producing DIY concerts under the banner “70×7 Productions.” If you’ve been associated with the Salem music scene during that time, you’ve probably played one or more of his shows, attended one or more of his shows, or at least seen some of his posters. He’s produced concerts at coffee shops, bars, all-ages venues, concert halls and everywhere in between. On August 14, that all ends with his final Salem event – a night with his buddies’ bands at Browns Town Lounge (see Live Beat for details on 70×7 Productions’ final three concerts). Blankenheim was asked a few questions about his time as a promoter here, and what his plans are for the future.

SW: Where are you moving, and why?

AB: I am moving to Adamstown, Pennsylvania. I have been given an awesome opportunity there to expand on what I have done here. Really, it’s time for a change and I feel if I don’t go now I never will.

SW: Are you going to be an event promoter there?

AB: I will, actually. I have several opportunities in PA to be a part of the music scene out there and to take what I have learned and done here with me.

SW: How did you get involved in the Salem music scene?

AB: In all truth, I started out due to boredom. I had been sitting in a class during college and a friend of mine and I decided that it would be fun to see if we could put on a concert at our school. We started to come up with concert ideas, promotion company names, etc. After this a friend of mine who owned a local clothing store asked for my help in booking shows at his shop. And as they say, the rest is history.

SW: When and why did you start 70×7 Productions?

AB: 70×7 Productions was started in 2000. At this time I felt there was a bit of a lull in the all-ages access to shows. I wanted to present Salem with events that showcased the local talent (which were misrepresented at times) as well as provide traveling bands with a place to play. I wanted the events to be safe as well as fairly priced (I have never charged more than $8 for any event I ever put on in the 11 years I have been a promoter).

SW: What are you going to miss about Salem’s music scene?

AB: I think what I will truly miss is the sense of community that the Salem music scene is. We protected each other, supported each other and we were there when anyone needed us.

SW: What are you going to miss about Salem (other than the music scene)?

AB: My friends and family. I have developed some of the best friendships that I will never, ever forget, friendships that have lasted 10-plus years. I am just grateful to everyone who is a part of my life.

SW: What should attendees expect from your last two shows?

AB: Lots of energy!!! I wanted the shows to reflect who 70×7 Productions was and will continue to be. Like I always say at the end of an e-mail or message: Support Local Music. Go To A Show.
