Bottle Rocket, Captain Hey Hey & The Whodunnitz, Ride Operator and Devil’s Punchbowl

IKE Box, 299 Cottage St. NE

6:30 p.m., $5, all-ages

The first of the 70×7 Productions farewell concerts features a collection of young(er) talents at Salem’s default all-ages venue. Local alternative rock outfit Bottle Rocket has picked up where Phantom! left off, making sure mid-valley teens have an exciting local rock concert to attend every once in a while. Opener Devil’s Punchbowl has been hovering around the local scene for years and has never received the appropriate attention it deserves. Show up early to check out one of Salem’s better alt rock bands.

Saturday, August 13

Find Your Smile, The Fools, Office Diving, Symmetry/Symmetry & Ninja Turtle Ninja Tiger

Triangle Inn, 3215 Liberty Rd. S

8 p.m., $6, 21+

70×7 Productions’ second farewell show (which falls on the same night as the first one) features a ridiculous amount of talent. The Fools are a favorite amongt Salem rock musicians, with young guitar virtuoso Sheene Coffin at the helm, versatile musician Matt Williams on the drums, and local music activist Jaysen Peters on drums. They play a brand of rock music that draws the rawness and energy from punk, the dissonance from blues and the heaviness from metal’s forefathers.

Sunday, August 14

Mouth, Kopath Bear, The Dude and DJ Cookies

Brown’s Town Lounge, 189 Liberty St. NE

7 p.m., free, 21+

The third and final 70×7 Productions farewell show is the only one of the bunch that has a free admission charge, and while the bill may not be stacked as high as the previous night’s concerts, this one may actually have the largest turnout. D.J. Cookies has a reputation of “bringing the party,” and Mouth and Kopath Bear are two of the Cherry City’s more popular alternative rock bands. The night may be a bit emotional too, since it actually is the final event 70×7 Productions will be throwing in Salem.

Faerabella

Clockworks, 241 Commercial St. NE

8 p.m., free, all-ages

Cabaret Jazz trio Faerabella has been gaining momentum around town with its dark ambiance and skillful players. The band – which has also been characterized as “steampunk” – features Dana McCarty on vocals, Paul Marche on contra bass and Mac MacGowan on cornet. Clockworks should serve as an excellent venue for the trio, providing an open, laid-back atmosphere that also allows all ages.

Saturday, August 20

Youth, Symmetry/Symmetry

Boon’s Treasury, 888 Liberty St. NE

9 p.m., free, 21+

It is becoming more common to find indie and alternative rock music on Boon’s Treasury’s calendar, and a bill consisting of Oregon indie rock gems Youth and Symmetry/Symmetry is a perfect example of this trend. Symmetry/Symmetry seem to be playing one of the top Portland clubs (like Mississippi Studios or Doug Fir) every month, and Youth seems to be headed that way. Both bands also played evening sets at the Great Idea at Enchanted Forest, and neither band shows any signs of slowing down. So having them both on a free bill in Salem is quite the treat. Also, is it just me or has Boon’s Treasury started serving their beer in smaller glasses (and for the same price)?
