On Tap: Half Penny Bar and Grill

I love this bar. It’s not the coolest or trendiest place on Earth, but it’s got quality food and is a good time. With something – and I mean something – going on every night, the Half Penny is worth your time. Owner Monty Miller has found the recipe for success with home-style comfort food with healthy options. “Everything we do is scratch cooking. We are all about healthy wraps on up to hearty chicken fried steak and gravy,” he says. Besides food that isn’t an afterthought, Monty believes in hospitality and a jam-packed calendar that will interest just about everybody!

Anyone can serve a gin and tonic, but this bar is all about hospitality. Enter and you won’t feel like a bother or a problem to solve. You are a person who needs to be served! “I hammer hospitality. I want everyone who enters through the doors to feel welcomed,” Miller says.

Which night is best? Well, if you like a lot of bang for your buck, pick Thursday to start. Thursday is “$2 you call it” night. Yup, all mix drinks are two bucks. Want some music with your Jack and Coke? “I am across the board. I do big blues acts. We’ve had Linda Hornbuckle, JFK, and lots of cover bands,” Miller says.

Happy Hour is Monday through Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday Night Football, Trivia on Tuesday, Blues Unplugged on Wednesday, DJ and Dancing on Thursday, and live music on Friday and Saturday nights. The daily lunch special is a burger and home-cut fries for $5. So go, grab some friends and see what customer service with something always going on is worth, maybe a half penny?
