If Dan Savage were a stoner chick, he’d be Mamakind, the author of Sex Pot: The Marijuana Lover’s Guide to Gettin’ It On. Mamakind is a columnist with SKUNK Magazine. She answers sex-related questions for stoners with a mixture of humor and straight talk.
Sex Pot could easily be dismissed as a gag gift to give someone who partakes in smoking and while it may be treated as such, the recipient is also likely to find something to learn within the pages. The book covers a wide swath of topics relating to sexuality for stoners with Mamakind’s readers posing questions about monogamy, oral sex, and many kinks. The questions are sometimes as irreverent as the answers, so that helps keep an interesting pace throughout the book.
There’s always a bit of caution when it comes to writing a review for a book that could be considered by some to be controversial. Am I asking people to commit a crime in order to form their own opinions on a book? Well, no. Books want to be free. As for the topic, here’s the thing about Oregonians: we have freedoms that many states do not have. We can kill ourselves legally, for instance. We can also engage in the ever-burning debate of medicinal marijuana and treatment of certain illnesses without committing a crime. In other words, there are many that embrace the weed in hiding and then there’s people like Mamakind, who has put everything out on Front Street.
While the book is obviously targeted at tokers, there’s plenty to be read by the masses. Mamakind dedicates the last few pages of the book to answering a question regarding a relationship in turmoil because of marijuana. She approaches it in a role as an educator. It’s definitely not going to change someone’s mind on the subject, but what it will do is make some people giggle at the brashness and others learn a thing or two between bags of Cheetos.
