Reel Buzz: Warrior, Contagion, Straw Dogs

What’s that sound? A heart-wrenching story about two brothers facing off against each other in the UFC octagon? Yeah, there’s that. Then there’s famous people getting sick and vomiting their way through a horror movie. There’s plenty for everyone in the movie selection this week.

Warrior

Tom Hardy may be all Batman, all the time right now, but for at least a split second he played one of the brothers that will face off in the octagon of this Ultimate Fighting Championship-inspired story. The brothers come from a troubled family that has a history with fighting, and with much-needed money on the line, the pair end up at the final showdown fighting each other. It’s good to see Nick Nolte (who is playing the father that trains one of the brothers) in a good role.

Contagion

For being a movie that is all about coughing on each other, it sure has a star-studded cast. Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow and many other famous faces show up. If you’ve ever wanted to watch Gwyneth Paltrow have seizures while you eat popcorn, here’s your chance.

Born to Be a Star

Fans of Nick Swardson have heard all about this movie, as he’s been talking it up on the various podcasts and panels he’s shown up on the last few months. In it, Swardson plays Bucky Larson, a kid who follows in his parent’s footsteps by moving from the Midwest to Hollywood to star in porn. Adam Sandler wrote the script. Hopefully this is a little more Grandma’s Boy and a little less 50 First Dates. Christina Ricci co-stars.

Straw Dogs

What’s it take for a couple to go completely batty? This movie explores it by throwing a young couple played by James Marsden and Kate Bosworth into a hostile environment. You see, Alexander Skarsgard (Eric from True Blood) and his crew aren’t so happy with the couple moving into their town. Tensions ramp up and up until all of them have spun out of control.

Piranha 3DD

I really wish that was a typo. Yes, the movie is called Piranha 3 “Double D.” Stop giggling. After the first Piranha 3D, the fish have gotten into a newly open waterpark, where there’s sure to be a lot of gratuitous nudity and really, really poor acting. Let’s face it, no one is going to this movie for the drama.

I Don’t Know How She Does It

Sarah Jessica Parker and Greg Kinnear play a married couple with two young girls. Parker’s character has a busy schedule of work and the kids, but there is a constant struggle between being a good mother and a good worker. Along the way, Pierce Brosnan comes in to offer sage advice on the balance of the two, but that’s not before the relationship is pushed to the brink. It’s a very Carrie Bradshaw role, so Parker could probably sleep through it.
