December brings Something Red
For the ninth year, Artists in Action brings cheer to downtown during a gray December. The juried art show “Something Red” consists of 112 pieces of art, all featuring the color red, through many different media, at 22 merchants downtown.
Something Red was started by a group of artists who were hunkering down for the winter between art shows, when they decided that they needed a pick-me-up during the winter months.
Now the show serves as a kick-off event with a record number of merchants sponsoring art and participating in the event. “We usually cap off the merchants at around 18, but this year we had 22 interested and that let us feature more art,” said Marilyn Krug, event director of Artists in Action.
The public is invited to an art walk December 7th from 5 to 7. “It is an amazing effort to add color to downtown from the artist, volunteers and merchants,” said Krug.
“The event really is a win-win; the artists of all different levels get exposure and the merchants gain exposure and potential new customers,” said Krug. This year, the tremendous response from merchants allowed for cash and gifts to be awarded at the ceremony instead of the usual ribbons.
“Every year the caliber of art has increased,” said Krug. “The range of art is always outstanding each year. We always get innovative pieces, since the show draws artists from all over Oregon. There is always something new … Some of the artists are at the caliber that they regularly show; and we have a lot of new and emerging artists.”
Several artists from various art associations participate, as well as new artists from around the state. “The art is for sale. Every year we sell pieces. It gives people a chance to think about giving the gift of art to people on their gift list,” said Krug.
Something Red brings out the imaginations and textiles. 3-D works, ceramics and paintings as well as photography are in this year’s show. “The judges agree that this is going to be a great show,” said Krug. Since the show is a collaborative effort, the Mayor will give out an award as well.
All of the artwork features the color red in some way. Red is a bright color, and it seemed to fit the holidays and a celebration of the holiday season.
This is the ninth year that Artists in Action has put on the December event.
“When we see 112 artists in one room that are all featuring the color red, it is really powerful.”
