The Friends of Salem Saturday Market (FSSM) provides free classes and workshops at the Salem Saturday Market. On July 17 at 11 a.m., the booth will be visited by Portland blogger Katy Wolk Stanley, the non-consumer advocate. Stanley’s blog describes being a non-consumer advocate like this: “By this I mean that I am here to help people learn to live on less, and to do so in a way that lessens their environmental impact. I define myself not by my purchases, but by my goals and actions.”
On July 24, FSSM will be celebrating the launch of the market’s “Zero Waste Zone.” The group led by Melanie Weston and eight community volunteers will be working on several projects aimed at reducing waste that is produced at the market. The group is looking for volunteers to help with the cause. Interested parties should contact Weston at 503-877-FSSM or email her at melanie@friendsofsalemsaturdaymarket.org. Workshops are planned to help consumers with their own household’s waste reduction.
They also plan to continue a local chefs series that began with Karo Thom of Alcyone Cafe earlier this month. Thom gathered fresh, local produce picked out at the Salem Saturday Market and cooked a seasonal meal from the ingredients.
All classes are free and no registration is necessary. FSSM is a non-profit organization run by volunteers that “encourages community support of local, sustainable agriculture; educates the public about healthy, locally produced food and goods; and enhances the creative, social and community aspects of the Saturday Market.” For more information on upcoming events held at their booth, visit http://bit.ly/a6qXi7.
