Willamette Humane Society (WHS) will be offering discounted adoption rates for cats and kittens that are adopted in August.

According to a news release by WHS, adoption fees will be reduced to only $20 for any adult cat (one year or older) or $30 for any kitten adopted from the shelter or the two area PETCO stores.

“Cats and kittens continue to pour into the shelter – we took in 705 cats in June compared to 188 dogs. Both our cat and dog adoption rates are down about 15% compared to last year,” said Kara Kuh, communications specialist for WHS.

Every adoptable cat or kitten is spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. Each adoption also includes a certificate for a free health exam by a participating veterinarian, a personalized ID tag, temporary collar, carrier, and 45 days of pet health insurance.

Adoption rates are usually $75 for cats and $90 for kittens.

On July 31, WHS will be hosting Oregon’s First Lady Mary Oberst and First Dog Hershey at “Tail Tales – Children’s Story Hour” on Saturday, July 31 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Kids and parents are invited to drop by to enjoy pet-themed stories and meet Hershey, who was adopted from the shelter in 2003. The event is free of charge.

Kuh said, “We thought it would be a fun way to support the “Reading for All” literacy initiative as well as bring more people to the shelter and help them see it for what it is – a bright, clean facility where animals are well cared for and families are welcome to visit.”

The Willamette Humane Society is an independent nonprofit organization located at 4246 Turner Rd. SE and on the web at willamettehumane.org. The shelter is open to the public Monday, Thursday, and Friday, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The shelter is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
