Salem Monthly gets leaner, greener, refocuses distribution

It was time to start practicing what we preach.

Longtime readers might notice changes in the February Salem Monthly, starting with it’s physical size. The paper is now printed on 13-inch paper rather than 15-inch.

“We made the decision for multiple reasons. Cost was certainly one of those, but at the end of the day we’re using less paper, we haven’t decreased the number of pages and we’ve got a more reader-friendly product,” said Eric Howald, Salem Monthly editor. “From a production standpoint, we’ve had a ton of fun this month getting to see how it comes together. It’s like getting to kick the tires on a new car.”

A new five-column layout for most content created space to explore other ways to invite readers in the the fold.

Those looking for Salem Monthly’s distribution boxes downtown are also in for a surprise – they’ve been moved to various locations along Lancaster and Commercial Street.

“We’re actually quadrupling our downtown distribution in the green boxes located on many street corners downtown,” said AP Walther, publisher. “We decided it was time to refocus the distribution to accommodate our plans for growth and expansion in 2010.”
