We’ve got a couple slow weeks ahead of us at the movies. M. Night Shyamalan has likely cleared the theaters for the little kid that bends air. “Predators” is opening on a Wednesday, but the trailer is not impressive. It looks like “Despicable Me” is the best that we’ve got to look forward to on July 9.

The Last Airbender
It seems strange that M. Night Shyamalan would adapt a movie. Think about it. The guy who brought us creepy kids seeing dead people, swinging away at aliens, and a hidden village in the middle of modern-day civilization. We already know what the ending of this one is. This movie goes like this: people who can control elements fight each other in a massive game of paper, rock, scissors. The Last Airbender, himself, can control all of the elements and end the war.
Mother and Child
This flick follows the stories of three women. A woman who gave up a daughter for adoption, that adopted daughter, and a woman looking to adopt a child of her own. The film was featured at the Sundance Film Festival and at the Toronto Film Festival, and now it’s playing at Salem Cinema. It stars Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, and Kerry Washington.

Predators
You can feel Robert Rodriguez in the trailer, but that’s only because Danny Trejo is one of the leads in this flick. Beyond that, you’ve got Laurence Fishburne trying very hard not to be Morpheus and a bunch of really lame line reads. Rodriguez is a producer for the flick but has top billing in the trailer for the movie. The director of the movie is Antal Nimród, whom you might remember from the blockbuster hit “Vacancy”, starring Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson. What’s that? You don’t remember that blockbuster hit? Let’s hope this movie spawns a good video game, at least.

Despicable Me
In this animated film, Steve Carell voices a supervillain who is completely villainy. That is, until he’s tasked with taking care of a trio of orphan girls. With the girls making a mockery of him and his evil ways, he has to rethink his plans to steal the moon. Russell Brand, Jason Segel, and Miranda Cosgrove also lend their voices to the flick.
